face in the smoke abandons the collection’s usual precision for pure feeling. Wandering lines gather and knot until, almost by accident, a face appears: heavy-lidded eyes, a long muzzle-like nose, a mouth caught between speech and silence.

Wolf, horse, or grieving spirit — the face refuses to settle, flickering between readings the way smoke flickers between shapes. The sparse composition leaves most of the page empty, and the emptiness does much of the emotional work.

As a stylistic outlier, it shows the hand behind the collection at its most unguarded: no patterns to hide behind, only line and instinct.

the tinkerer’s ray gun looks like something retrieved from an inventor’s attic: a device of unknowable purpose, lovingly over-engineered and decorated far beyond necessity. Ornamental plates, dotted seams, and striped grips crowd together into a silhouette that suggests a ray gun from a future that never arrived.

Yet the machine is not entirely machine. A calm dove-like head tucks beneath the body, and organic curves soften every mechanical join, hinting that this invention may have grown as much as it was built.

totem of beaks stacks its birds the way stories stack generations: each resting on the one beneath, each facing its own direction. A toucan-like head crowns the column, horns sweeping back like a headdress, while below, a kingfisher’s long beak cuts a clean diagonal through the composition.

Stippled patches, striped bands, and solid black masses give each bird its own plumage while binding the whole column together. Between the figures, ambiguous forms suggest wings mid-fold or a third bird almost coming into focus.
