Description

totem of beaks stacks its birds the way stories stack generations: each resting on the one beneath, each facing its own direction. A toucan-like head crowns the column, horns sweeping back like a headdress, while below, a kingfisher’s long beak cuts a clean diagonal through the composition.

Stippled patches, striped bands, and solid black masses give each bird its own plumage while binding the whole column together. Between the figures, ambiguous forms suggest wings mid-fold or a third bird almost coming into focus.

The piece draws on the totem tradition of honouring animals as carriers of meaning, translated into flowing ink — a lineage of birds, balanced and watchful.
