Description
the umbrella waltz spins its story from stripes and scallops. At the top, a jaunty hat tilts over a masked, striped face; below, a great scalloped skirt flares outward, dotted and swagged like a festival tent in motion.
The whole figure balances on the ribs of an opened umbrella, as though the dance were being performed on the one surface no dancer should trust. Bold dots float alongside like thrown confetti.
The piece has the charm of a music box brought to life — theatrical, buoyant, and a little precarious, exactly as a good waltz should be.
